The order to create an early warning aircraft came in 1958. Trials on Tu-95 and Tu-116 airframes ran into equipment cooling problems and a lack of room for operators; the Tu-114's wide fuselage solved both at once. An in-flight refuelling probe was added to extend missions. It served with the Soviet Air Force until replaced by the Beriev A-50, and the last example was retired in 1984.
