The next step
The Su-27SM3 is an upgrade package applied to in-service Su-27SMs. It modernises the airframe and gives the fire-control system compatibility with the more modern R-77-1 beyond-visual-range missile; maximum take-off weight increases and AL-31F-M1 engines are fitted. The Russian Air Force has been receiving aircraft modernised to this standard. NATO identifies it as Flanker-J Mod. It should not be confused with the Su-27SM2, a proposed block upgrade with the Irbis-E radar that never entered service on cost grounds.
