The F4H-1 (F-4B from 1962) was the first mass-production version of the Phantom II, powered by two afterburning General Electric J79-GE-8 turbojets. It formed the backbone of Navy and Marine Corps carrier fighter aviation through the 1960s, carrying four AIM-7 Sparrow missiles with an AIM-9 Sidewinder option on the inner pylons, plus up to 7,257 kg of air-to-ground ordnance.
