Junkers F 13 F 13be, ce, dle, fle, ge, he, ke (Junkers L5)

Junkers distinguished its F 13 versions with a two-letter code in which the first letter identified the airframe and the second the engine, so that every L5-engined machine carried a second letter -e: the -fe, for instance, was the long -f fuselage with an L5 installed. The L5, an upright six-cylinder water-cooled inline of 230 kW (310 hp), was the engine that carried the type through its most productive years, and it was fitted to a whole run of airframes beyond the better-known de and fe: be, ce, dle, fle, ge, he and ke. The progression is the same one described for the type as a whole, whose installed power grew step by step from 160 hp to 570 hp as operators asked for higher cruising speeds and greater range, with the extra type letters be to ka recording each engine change. These versions have no separate operational record of their own: they were sold into the same worldwide airline, air-force and survey work as the rest of the F 13 family, and are censused here so that the engine census of the type is complete.
