The Mk IIC replaced the machine guns with four 20 mm Hispano Mk II cannon in a slightly modified wing; the first thirty four-cannon wing sets were hand-built in the experimental shop in November 1940 from damaged wings, and the version entered production in early 1941. With the 884 kW (1,185 hp) Merlin XX at 6,400 m it reached 550 km/h, had an 11,000 m ceiling and could carry up to two 500 lb (230 kg) bombs. As it lost its edge against more modern German fighters it increasingly moved to ground attack ("Hurribomber"), night fighting and intruder missions; the last Hurricane built, PZ865, was itself a Mk IIC.
