History
The F-14D Super Tomcat closed the programme's evolution. Like the F-14B it carries General Electric F110-GE-400 engines, but it takes a far larger step in electronics: a glass cockpit, digital avionics and the replacement of the veteran AWG-9 by the AN/APG-71 radar. Added to these were the Airborne Self Protection Jammer, the JTIDS tactical information distribution system, SJU-17(V) NACES ejection seats and an infrared search and track system.
Thirty-seven new-build aircraft were completed and a further 18 F-14As were rebuilt to D standard, designated F-14D(R). From 2005 some F-14Ds received the ROVER III modification.
