Alongside the new-build aircraft, eighteen F-14As went through a full rebuild to D standard, with F110-GE-400 engines, digital avionics and the AN/APG-71 radar. The parenthesised R identifies exactly that origin: a rebuilt airframe rather than a newly manufactured one.
