History
In the late 1990s the Navy put 81 F-14Bs through a modernisation programme with two aims: extending the life of airframes worn by years of carrier operations, and bringing the offensive and defensive systems up to date. The resulting aircraft became known as the F-14B (Upgrade). These were not new-build machines but existing airframes reworked.
