The first version planned under the B designation, with more powerful Pratt & Whitney F401-400 turbofans; its prototype flew in 1973 and the programme was cancelled in April 1974.

History
While the Tomcat was still in development Grumman had mapped out an upgrade path for its propulsion and avionics. The first F-14B was to be a re-engined F-14A fitted with the Pratt & Whitney F401-400, then still under development; the prototype so equipped flew in 1973. The programme was terminated in April 1974 and the designation fell free, so that in 1991 it was reused for the production version with General Electric F110 engines.
