Grumman F-14 Tomcat ASF-14

The ASF-14, Advanced Strike Fighter-14, was the last variant to carry the Tomcat name. By the available accounts it would have borne little relation to its predecessors beyond appearance: it drew on technology and design practice from the Advanced Tactical Fighter and Advanced Tactical Aircraft programmes and would have been a new-build aircraft with considerably greater development cost. Its projected performance did not clearly exceed that of the ST-21 and even Grumman was unenthusiastic. The Super Tomcat proposals were finally ruled out as too costly and by the political opposition of Defense Secretary Dick Cheney; the Navy chose the cheaper F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
