What it's about

A short documentary about the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, a tandem-rotor heavy-lift transport helicopter. It covers its design and its use in military and humanitarian missions.

Historical background

It entered service in 1962 and is named after the Chinook Native American people. It made its debut in Vietnam, where it carried more than 10,000 kg of ammunition, artillery, supplies and medical gear to areas that convoys could not reach. It also lifted artillery pieces, vehicles and downed aircraft. In Afghanistan it supplied isolated outposts while flying above 15,000 feet, and in Iraq it carried armored Humvees and artillery across the desert. After the 2015 Nepal earthquake it delivered more than 75 tonnes of aid within a few days. In Australia it has been used against wildfires.

Key facts

It has two engines and two rotors with no tail rotor, so all its power goes into lift and forward flight. It can carry vehicles and artillery slung beneath the fuselage, and its range exceeds 630 km without refueling. More than 1,200 are in service with the armed forces of over 20 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Japan and Australia. The CH-47F version adds a digital cockpit, advanced navigation and more powerful engines, and Boeing continues to upgrade the model.
