What it's about

Category-by-category review of the aircraft from the Ilyushin design bureau, born in the middle of the Second World War: attack and fighter aircraft, bombers, military transports and special-purpose aircraft, passenger aircraft, trainers and gliders, with a brief description of each.

Historical context

The attack block opens with the Il-2, the "flying tank" built in huge numbers for the Eastern Front. Next come the Il-8, the Il-10, which entered combat at the end of the war, the Il-16, the Il-40, a pioneer among jet attack aircraft, and the Il-102. Among the bombers are the DB-3 and its derivative Il-4, the diesel-engined Il-6, the Il-28, a twin-jet bomber emblematic of its era, and the Il-30 and Il-46 prototypes. Transports and special-purpose aircraft include the electronic-intelligence Il-20M, the Il-22 airborne command post, the anti-submarine Il-38, the Il-76, its Il-78 tanker version, the Il-82, the Il-112 and the A-50, A-60 and A-100 platforms.

Highlights

In civil aviation there is the postwar Il-12, the turboprop Il-18, the Il-62, with four jet engines clustered at the tail, and the first Soviet wide-body airliner, in which passengers boarded through the lower deck and left their luggage there. These are followed by the Il-96 and the regional Il-114. The review closes with the Il-32 cargo glider.
