Which maharaja ordered an Avro Commodore?

Short answer

One was sold to the Maharaja of Vizianagram, one of only six Avro 641 Commodores built, including the prototype. It proved unsuitable for conditions in India, so it was returned to Britain and scrapped. The first Commodore had been delivered to its owner on 24 May 1934.

A five-seat cabin biplane

The Avro 641 Commodore was a British single-engine, five-seat cabin biplane. After building the three-seat Avro 639 Cabin Cadet, Avro designed this larger cabin biplane. It had a steel-tube structure similar to the Tutor's, heavily staggered single-bay wings, and a faired landing gear. Only six were built in total, including the prototype. The first was delivered to its owner on 24 May 1934.

Egypt and the war

Two others were sold to private owners in Egypt and later passed to the Egyptian Army Air Force. The two Commodores still in service in England when the Second World War broke out were requisitioned for the Royal Air Force and the Air Transport Auxiliary. One crashed fatally in 1941, and the last was withdrawn from use in 1942.
