A French first

The Blériot 111 was the first French aircraft fitted with retractable landing gear. It was a four-seat executive transport monoplane designed by André Herbemont.

A family of prototypes

The first aircraft flew on 24 January 1929, powered by a 280 hp (209 kW) Hispano-Suiza 6Mbr. In October 1929 a second variant flew, known as the 111bis or 111/2. The 111/4 flew on 27 October 1930. The 111/6 was entered in the 1934 London-Melbourne air race. It was withdrawn from the race when its landing gear was damaged two days before the start. As there was no commercial interest in the design, no more Blériot 111s were built.

The Blériot 110's records

The Blériot 110 was developed specifically to pursue new world long-distance flight records. With Lucien Bossoutrot and Maurice Rossi at the controls, it broke the world distance record three times between 15 November and 26 March 1932, and on the last occasion it stayed in the air for 76 hours and 34 minutes, covering 10,601 km (6,587 mi).
