Why does the Sea King have a boat-like hull?
Short answer
The amphibious hull allowed it to make water landings and, being completely watertight, to stay afloat on the ocean surface for extended periods. In the civilian range, the amphibious S-61N version appealed to offshore operators, while the S-61L gave up some of that equipment.

A watertight fuselage for landing on the sea
The adoption of an amphibious hull allowed the Sea King to make a water landing. Being completely watertight, the aircraft could remain afloat on the ocean surface for extended periods. The Sea King also took on tasks that had previously been carried out using two separate helicopters.
Engines and designation
Its powerplant consisted of General Electric T58-GE-8B engines, initially capable of delivering up to 1,250 shp (930 kW) each. The aircraft's designation was changed to SH-3A.
The civilian versions: with and without amphibious equipment
The S-61N first flew on 7 August 1962. The S-61L, by contrast, had an enlarged cabin and dispensed with some amphibious features, such as its stabilizing floats, to gain load capacity. That version was considered attractive to utility operators, while the amphibious S-61N appealed to offshore support operators.
