A ramp that can be jettisoned

The most striking feature of the SA 321L's ramp is that it is designed to be jettisoned: the loading ramp can be released in emergency situations. It is a sturdily built, hinged rear ramp, and it serves as the helicopter's main entry point for bulky cargo or equipment. It closes off the rear of the cabin, where the fuselage tapers into a simple semi-monocoque section.

The South African version

The SA 321L is the military transport variant developed for South Africa. It is distinguished by the filters fitted to the air intakes. South Africa ordered sixteen SA 321L in 1965. Deliveries were completed in 1967 and the aircraft were assigned to 15 Squadron of the South African Air Force.

What goes through the ramp

In transport configuration, the helicopter can carry 27 equipped soldiers. The alternative is to carry 15 stretchers for casualty evacuation tasks.
