Did you know…

How long does it take Artemis to reach the Moon?

Short answer

The outbound trip takes only a few days. Artemis II is planned as a roughly ten-day flight: launch, systems testing in Earth orbit, a wide loop behind the Moon, and return to Earth. A Moon landing isn't planned until Artemis III, with a much longer mission.

Why the trip is short

The distance to the Moon can be covered by chemical rockets in a few days, and Artemis uses the same physics as Apollo: a burn in Earth orbit accelerates the spacecraft onto an elongated trajectory whose far end lies near the Moon. It would be possible to go faster, but that costs fuel needed for braking and for the return trip. Slower, low-energy trajectories take weeks and are designed for uncrewed cargo, not for a crew with limited reserves of air, water and patience.

Artemis II: about ten days

Artemis II is designed as a roughly ten-day flight, with four people aboard an Orion spacecraft launched by a Space Launch System rocket. After systems testing in a high Earth orbit comes the maneuver toward the Moon, a wide loop behind its far side, and the return on a trajectory that, in an emergency, would bring the spacecraft back to Earth without needing another burn. No entry into lunar orbit is planned; life support, navigation, communications and the heat shield are checked. Splashdown takes place in the ocean.

Why the programs last longer than the flights

Between the announcement and the launch lie the real years. Artemis I flew uncrewed around the Moon and back in 2022, and provided the data on the heat shield and onboard systems. For the first Moon landing, with Artemis III, a lunar lander and new space suits must also be finished, tested and available in lunar orbit; refueling in space is also part of the plan. Announced timelines in this program are regularly delayed; the flight time itself isn't affected, because the Moon is always at the same distance.
