Did you know…

Can you leave the airport during a layover?

Short answer

Yes, you can leave the airport during a layover if three conditions are met: enough time (at least four or five hours), permission to enter that country (a visa if required, even for transit) and luggage that isn't checked through and blocking you. On return you must clear security again and, sometimes, passport control.

Layover, connection and real time

A layover is the intermediate stop between two legs of a trip. If it lasts one or two hours, the sensible choice is to stay in the transit area. From four or five hours onward, leaving becomes practical at airports well connected to the city, such as Amsterdam, Munich, Istanbul or Singapore, where a train or metro reaches downtown in under half an hour. You need to add passport control, the round trip itself, and the margin the airline requires before gate boarding, usually 60 to 90 minutes on international flights.

Entry requirements

Leaving the airport means entering the country. With an EU passport that requires no formality within the Schengen area, but anyone who needs a visa for that country cannot leave the transit zone even if their flight is a mere stopover; some states even require a transit visa without ever leaving the terminal. The United States and Canada require every connecting passenger to clear immigration and collect their luggage, so leaving the customs area there is unavoidable. Several hubs actively encourage the visit: Singapore, Doha, Istanbul and Taipei offer free excursions to passengers with long layovers.

Luggage and ticket

If the luggage is checked through to the final destination, it continues on its own without the passenger's intervention. If the flights are on separate tickets, it must be collected, carried out and checked in again, which multiplies the time needed. On return, passengers go through the security filter again and, on international layovers, outbound passport control. It's best to have the boarding pass for the second leg before leaving the terminal.
