Eleven years of production

Large-scale production of the L-29 began in April 1963, and 3,600 aircraft were built over an eleven-year run. Around 3,600 were built between 1963 and 1974, with the manufacturer citing 3,665 as the precise figure. Output topped 3,000 L-29 Delfín trainers.

Why it won the competition

In the comparison against its rivals, the L-29 was chosen as the winner. It won and was adopted as the Warsaw Pact's standard jet trainer following the 1961 competition. The Czechoslovak trainer's main advantages included reliability and durability, along with ease of maintenance, ease of manufacture, and low price.

Who received them

Every member adopted it except Poland, which stubbornly kept its own Iskra. Poland was thus the only Warsaw Pact country to adopt the Iskra, while most others chose the rival Delfín. Roughly 2,000 units were delivered to the Soviet Union. More than 2,000 of them went to the Soviet Union alone.
