How many German aircraft did Polish fighters shoot down in 1939?
Short answer
Polish fighters claimed around 126 German aircraft in the 1939 campaign, and one order of battle raises the count to 134 across all types. These are not confirmed kills: German records show about 285 aircraft destroyed from all causes, many to anti-aircraft fire.

What the Polish fighter force claimed
The figure usually cited for the September 1939 campaign is around 126 German aircraft claimed by Polish fighters. One order of battle for the campaign raises the count to 134 when every type of aircraft is included. It is worth holding onto the word "claimed": this is what crews and units recorded, not an inventory of wreckage verified against the enemy's own figures.
The price paid by Polish aviation
On the Polish side, historian Wacław Król puts Polish aircraft losses from all causes at 325, with about 171 crew killed or missing. Of those losses, fighters alone account for 114-115 aircraft, meaning a large share of the Polish fighter force's effort was left on the ground within a few weeks of combat.
Why the claims don't match German records
German accounting offers a different reference point: around 285 aircraft destroyed from all causes, many of them lost to anti-aircraft fire rather than air combat. That total, which covers every cause of loss, leaves little room for the figure claimed by fighters alone to be taken at face value, which is why Polish claims cannot be accepted literally. This comparison is the standard exercise when assessing any air campaign: one side's claims and the other's loss records are consulted together, and the gap between them is precisely what marks the margin of uncertainty in the 1939 figures.
