How did the An-26's rear ramp open?

Short answer

It had two opening modes: it could be lowered so vehicles could drive in, or slid under the fuselage so cargo could be loaded directly from a truck bed. That ramp also allowed the cargo hold to be sealed and pressurized in flight.

Two loading positions

When loading, the ramp could be lowered to allow vehicles to drive in, or slid under the fuselage so that cargo could be loaded directly from a truck bed. The loading ramp allowed the cargo hold to be sealed and pressurized in flight.

Why the ventral hatch wasn't enough

The An-24T, the family's tactical transport, had worked well supporting Soviet troops at austere locations, but its ventral cargo hatch limited cargo handling. The An-26 reuses most of the An-24's airframe, with high-mounted cantilever wings carrying two Ivchenko AI-24 turboprops.

Mission change in half an hour

The aircraft could be reconfigured in 20-30 minutes from the troop or cargo transport mission to the medical evacuation role, with up to 24 stretchers fitted. The An-30, designed in the Soviet Union for aerial cartography, began production in 1971 at the Antonov factory.
