What is the An-72's landing gear like?
Short answer
Four independent single-wheel main legs that retract inward into sizeable fairings. Combined with high-flotation tyres, that sturdy gear lets the aircraft operate from sand, grass or other unpaved surfaces.

Four independent legs
The An-72's landing gear consists of four independent main legs, each with a single wheel, which retract inward into sizeable fairings. The combination of sturdy gear and high-flotation tyres allows it to operate from sand, grass or other unpaved surfaces.
A wing for short runways
The wing is fitted with several flaps that travel on tracks; the outer ones are double-slotted, and the leading edge also carries slats.
Ramp, cargo and passengers
The rear fuselage has a hinged cargo ramp with a rear fairing that slides back and up to clear the opening. Up to 7.5 tonnes (7.4 long tons; 8.3 short tons) can be airdropped by parachute. In passenger configuration it seats up to 52 people. It can also carry 24 stretcher casualties together with 12 seated occupants and one attendant.
