Event and crew
Recording of the Cambrai-Niergnies air show held on Sunday 5 September 2021, followed almost from start to finish with the event's official announcer's voice in the background. The piece runs through the afternoon's programme in order, from the first presentations to the closing, and ends with a few words from the organiser about preparing the event.
What you see
The day opens with a military sport parachuting demonstration, which the announcer uses to explain how army parachutists are trained. Vintage aircraft follow, including machines with the black-and-white invasion stripes painted on for the Second World War landings, and a Dauphin helicopter from Flotilla 35F of the French Navy.
Aerobatic pilots then perform, one of them with over 1,000 flying hours, more than half in aerobatics, and a training-aircraft patrol flying in tight formation, with inverted-flight passes and near-zero-g figures. Between acts, institutional announcements are heard: the French Air and Space Force notes that it recruits around 3,000 young people aged 16 to 30 each year, and a local sponsor from Caudry's lace industry, which employs about 600 local families, thanks the organisers for the invitation. Towards the end, Mirage passes and the patrol's salute are seen.
The video closes with the organiser. He highlights the work of the volunteer teams, who arrived from Thursday onwards, and of the flight crews, and says the good weather also helped make the event a success.
The aircraft on display
The audio, captured with ambient sound, reveals few technical details. During one of the aerobatic acts, the announcer places the aircraft in the history of the 1972 Salon-de-Provence world aerobatics championship. In the vintage-aircraft act, he explains the role of the invasion stripes.
