Event and team

Display of the First World War formation at the Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show 2024: British reconnaissance and bomber aircraft with escort, against German fighters.

What you see

A BE2e and a DH9 escorted by an SE5a simulate a bombing run. Then the German fighters take off, an Albatros and a Fokker Dr.I triplane, and an air battle is re-enacted: the Germans try to get on the tail of the British biplanes, while the commentator recalls the vulnerability of the BE2.

The aircraft on display

According to the commentary, the BE2e aimed to improve on the early BE2s, but barely managed to. The DH9 was designed as a strategic bomber to carry the war to Germany in response to German air raids on Britain. Its six-cylinder, 230-horsepower engine gave constant trouble, struggled to climb to altitude, and by the summer of 1918 its shortcomings were evident. The Albatros series, led by the D.Va on the German side, ranks among the most important German fighters of the war, although it suffered structural problems. The Fokker Dr.I is associated with the Red Baron, who scored his last 19 victories in this triplane after having achieved most of his earlier ones in the Albatros D.II and D.III, and was shot down and killed on 21 April 1918.
