Event and lineup
Finale of the Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show 2022 with the Duxford Wing, a large formation of Spitfires and Hurricanes. The commentator describes it as a very different, reflective edition, which closed with a final salute to Queen Elizabeth II.
What you see
The aircraft gather on the grass and tarmac runways, with three Mk Is at the head, and take off; a Spitfire XIV occupies the centre of the scene. The formation then passes over the airfield and splits into sections, breaking off to land by entering over the end of the motorway. Much of the video is ambient sound and music.
The aircraft on display
The commentary reviews the background of these fighters. Churchill became Prime Minister on 10 May 1940, the British Expeditionary Force was evacuated from Dunkirk in Operation Dynamo, and after the fall of France, Germany prepared Operation Sea Lion. The Battle of Britain is officially dated from 10 July 1940. The roughly 3,000 recognised airmen, including those from fifteen overseas countries, are "the few", after Churchill's speech in the Commons on 20 August 1940, which is heard during the formation's flypast.
