Video from the channel Bonampak2012 about Sukhoi Su-27, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 9:59. Language: Spanish. Video type: Documentary.

What it's about

This compilation combines music and footage of the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker with Spanish-narrated excerpts from a documentary on the fighter. It covers the design goals, its presentation in the West and its naval and modernised versions.

Historical context

Sukhoi sought a long-range, heavily armed and highly manoeuvrable fighter capable of matching the F-15 Eagle and intercepting attack aircraft, bombers and cruise missiles at low altitude. The aircraft entered service in the mid-1980s. NATO first saw it up close in September 1988, when two Su-27s based on the Kola Peninsula intercepted a Norwegian P-3 Orion. In 1989 it was displayed at the Paris Air Show, where test pilot Viktor Pugachev performed the Cobra manoeuvre. In 1992, Anatoli Kvochur presented it in the United Kingdom with a very low pass on arrival at the Air Tattoo.

Key facts

The narration mentions the naval version, the Su-33, which serves in Russian naval aviation aboard the carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which carries about 30 aircraft dedicated to air defence. The Flanker can carry up to ten air-to-air missiles, including the medium-range R-27 and the short-range R-73. It also mentions the Su-27M, developed from the late 1980s and intended to serve as the Su-35. Its new multimode radar can track 15 targets and engage six at once.
