Preview of a longer documentary about the North American F-86 Sabre, a transonic jet fighter. It is known as the first American swept-wing fighter capable of facing the Soviet MiG-15 in the Korean War.
It was developed in the late 1940s. Between 1949 and 1956, more than 7,800 were built in the United States, Japan and Italy, plus 738 naval FJ-2 and FJ-3 versions, 1,815 Canadair Sabres and 112 CAC Sabres. In total that adds up to 9,860 units, making it the most-produced Western jet fighter.
North American, the manufacturer of the P-51 Mustang, started from its FJ-1 Fury to design the XP-86. It was lighter and faster: an estimated 582 mph (about 937 km/h), against the Fury's 547. Even so, it was initially feared it might be cancelled in favour of the more advanced XP-80 and XP-84.
