Video from the channel Discover Southern California about Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, linked on its Above Ten Thousand entry. Duration: 11:14. Language: English. Video type: Air show.

Show and aircraft

The video gathers scenes from an air show at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, with the show's announcer and comments from two presenters. The specific edition is not stated.

What you see

Marines simulate an assault: the first wave exits the aircraft and forms a defensive position around the landing zone. They are supported by ACV amphibious combat vehicles, which move from water to land without losing momentum, and armed JLTV trucks. The commentators introduce a pilot nicknamed "Scratch" Mitchell, a Canadian and former CF-18 demonstration pilot. A KC-135 Stratotanker also flies past, its inner pods coming within 18 inches of the ground (about 46 cm).

The aircraft on display

The commentators focus on a Marine Corps tiltrotor aircraft. To store it aboard ships, the wing rotates and the blades fold: it goes from 84 feet (about 26 m) between rotor tips to taking up 28 feet (about 8.5 m) on deck. It can carry 24 Marines with full gear or a 15,000-pound (about 6,800 kg) external load, and takes off in just a few hundred feet.
