Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor F-22 derivado para el F-X japonés

In August 2018 Lockheed Martin offered the Japan Air Self-Defense Force a derivative of the F-22 for its fifth/sixth-generation F-X programme; the same design was later proposed to the U.S. Air Force. The configuration combined a modified F-22 airframe with enlarged wings to increase fuel capacity and take combat radius to 1,200 nautical miles, about 2,200 kilometres, together with the avionics and improved stealth coatings of the F-35. Neither the U.S. nor the Japanese air force ultimately considered the proposal, on cost grounds and because of the export restrictions in force and industrial workshare concerns. The ban on exporting the Raptor, established by the Obey amendment, had already frustrated earlier attempts to sell it to Japan.
