History
In January 2015 the Russian defence ministry ordered an initial batch of two aircraft. The tanker was to pass more than 65 tonnes of fuel at a distance of 3,500 km, well beyond what the Il-78M manages, and to carry the ORM-1 universal refuelling systems already proven on combat tankers. The programme was cancelled amid disagreements between the ministry and Ilyushin and in favour of the Il-76MD-90A platform, from which the Il-78M-90A derives.
