The Mk IIB brought into production the twelve-Browning wing (four per wing in the original bays plus two further out) already trialled in 1940, entering production at Hawker and Austin in February 1941. Its distinguishing feature was two underwing racks, initially for one 250 lb bomb each and increased to 500 lb (230 kg) by late 1941, earning it the "Hurribomber" nickname. From autumn 1941 it was used to bomb small targets in occupied Europe, combining fighter and light fighter-bomber roles.
