Handley Page Herald Series 100

With the investment already made and no orders in hand, Handley Page decided to press on and announce a version re-engined with the Rolls-Royce Dart. The HPR.7 Dart Herald carries two 1,910 shp Dart 527 engines driving 12 ft 6 in (3.81 m) four-bladed variable-pitch Dowty Rotol propellers, lengthens the fuselage by 20 in (51 cm) and increases fuel capacity.

The first prototype was converted to Dart Herald standard and flew in that form on 11 March 1958; the Series 100 was certified in April that year and the first production aircraft flew on 30 October 1959. The basic price in 1960 was around £185,000. The first order came in June 1959: British European Airways leased three for its Scottish Highlands and Islands routes. Only four were built: the market already wanted the larger cabin of the Series 200 and no further Series 100 was ordered.
