History
The F-14C appeared on Grumman's planned upgrade path as the step beyond the F401-engined F-14B: the same re-engined airframe but with advanced multi-mission avionics. The cancellation of the F-14B programme in April 1974 took this version with it. The B and D upgrades that did reach service broadly followed that original path, though much later and across fewer airframes.
