Analysis of the final accident report for a Douglas DC-6 registered N451CE, which crashed on August 1, 2019, on the remote gravel airstrip at Candle 2, Alaska, on a flight from Fairbanks. According to the report, the aircraft flew too low on final approach, dragged the landing gear through vegetation, and the right main wheel struck a mound of dirt and rocks next to the threshold. The crew tried to correct the deviation with asymmetric reverse thrust; the aircraft continued straight for about 2,000 feet and then turned 180 degrees, sustaining substantial fuselage damage. None of the three occupants were injured. The probable cause was failure to maintain an adequate glide path, which led to the impact, separation of the right main landing gear, and loss of directional control.
