History

The civil freighter

The DC-4-1037 is the cargo model Douglas offered after the war alongside the DC-4-1009 airliner. It shares airframe, engines and performance with it, differing in the interior fit for freight.

In practice it competed against hundreds of surplus C-54s converted by Douglas itself and by others, which is why postwar civil production stopped at 79 aircraft of all models. The freight vocation stayed with the type to the end: many DC-4s and C-54s finished as fire-fighting tankers, work they went on doing until the late 1990s.
