Douglas DC-4 DC-4-1009

The DC-4-1009 is the civil passenger model built after the war, when Douglas finally resumed the airline production the conflict had taken from it. It could carry up to 88 passengers and it is the type's reference version: the published DC-4 specifications — from Jane's all the World's Aircraft 1947 — describe it.

Its figures: 28.6 m long, 35.8 m in span, 8.4 m high, 19,641 kg empty, 33,112 kg maximum take-off weight, 451 km/h top speed at 14,000 ft, 365 km/h cruise at 60% power and 5,311 km of range, rising to 4,250 miles in ferry configuration with the inner wing fuel cells. Crew is four, and the cabin took 44 passengers with baggage and freight as a day transport, 22 in sleeper configuration and up to 86 in high-density seating. Only 79 new civil DC-4s were built after the war, a small number beside the 1,163 military C-54s, because the market filled up with converted military surplus.
