ATR 72 ATR 72MP

The ATR 72MP is the maritime patrol version Leonardo develops on the ATR 72-600 for search and rescue, command and control, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR). The aircraft's backbone is Leonardo Electronics' ATOS (Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance) system, which manages the sensors and merges their output into a tactical picture presented at up to four workstations.

The main sensors are a multimode radar — which can be an active electronically scanned array such as the Leonardo Seaspray 7300 — an electro-optical/infrared turret, an automatic identification system (AIS) for shipping and an airborne search and rescue direction finder (ASARS DF). A tactical display is added to the glass cockpit and can be integrated with INS/GPS positioning and the IFF transponder. For communications it carries three U/VHF radios, one HF set and a wideband SATCOM, and it accepts additional equipment such as electronic support measures (ESM) or, optionally, a defensive aids sub-system (DASS) for operations in hostile areas.

Together with the ATR 72 ASW and the -600 MAR it forms the programme's military branch, and it is the version that has taken the type into the Turkish Navy, the Italian Air Force and the Guardia di Finanza.
