An F-35A crashes on landing at Eglin

May 19, 2020

An F-35A of the 58th Fighter Squadron crashed while landing at night at Eglin Air Force Base at the end of a training mission. The pilot ejected and was recovered alive. The investigation pointed to a combination of excessive approach speed, pilot fatigue, a landing-system malfunction and interference from the helmet-mounted display, whose imagery overlapped the visual references.
