Mustangs escort bombers over Berlin
March 1944
From early 1944 the US Eighth Air Force's P-51s escorted heavy bombers on raids over Germany, including Berlin, helping to cripple the Luftwaffe's fighter arm. Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring, its commander, was quoted as saying: "When I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the jig was up."
