Sinking of the battleship Tirpitz

On 12 November 1944, Lancasters of Nos. 617 and 9 Squadrons RAF sank the German battleship Tirpitz off Håkøya island near Tromsø, Norway, with 12,000 lb Tallboy bombs in Operation Catechism, removing Germany's greatest surface threat to the Arctic convoys.
