History

The YF4H-1 made its maiden flight on 27 May 1958 from Lambert-St. Louis, with nose gear door, hydraulic and engine problems on that first flight. The development-batch aircraft were designated F4H-1F and were redesignated F-4A in the 1962 tri-service designation unification; 45 were built, used mainly for testing and evaluation rather than front-line service.
